The pursuit of wellness requires us to consider all the interconnected aspects of life. Although modern-day western medicine has provided us with a long list of essential, life-saving medical advances, it has also trained us to view our health as a collection of individual symptoms and treatments, as opposed to looking at the whole person.

A holistic approach to health encourages medical practitioners to recognise all aspects of a person’s life to address the root cause of the problem rather than just the symptoms. This approach takes into account how all seemingly individual parts of our lives work together to heal or cause illness, offering a complementary approach beyond treating symptoms alone. This article explores five dimensions of holistic health and how they impact our overall wellbeing.

The 5 Dimensions of Holistic Health

When addressing health issues and symptoms, holistic health looks beyond the physical body, such as pain, fatigue, and physical illnesses. Symptoms may be caused by physical pain or discomfort, but they can also be caused by underlying emotional, mental, spiritual, and social issues. How we care for ourselves physically can also profoundly affect our mental and emotional health.

The Body

Health is primarily thought of in terms of our bodies’ physical condition and how optimally they function. Health issues and imbalances can be detected and monitored by observing symptoms such as pain, fatigue, and tension. Traditional medicine treats these physical symptoms with medications, physical therapies and surgeries, depending on the patient’s needs, which can be immensely helpful to them. However, the underlying causes of physical symptoms can be caused by emotional, social, spiritual, mental, and other imbalances. A person’s environment, lifestyle choices, relationships, and other aspects of their lives can affect their physical health. In the same way, mental and emotional health can be influenced by our physical wellness when, for example, sleep patterns, diet, and exercise are out of balance. Many studies show that our mood, emotions, and mental health can be improved by getting more sleep, eating nutrient-rich foods, and exercising daily.
A holistic practitioner considers all aspects of the patient’s health when treating physical symptoms. Treatments including massage, natural alternatives and stress management techniques can be of profound benefit to patients as adjunctive or alternative to traditional mainstream medicine therapies.

Emotion health

An individual’s emotional health can be defined as how they manage their moods and emotions as they go about their daily lives. The definition of an emotionally healthy person does not necessarily mean they are always happy or never experience setbacks. Instead, it means they have the ability to cope in a wide range of situations and environments.

Mental health practices like mindfulness and meditation, counselling and therapy, journaling, and sound therapy can be equally important as physical health practices. Emotional distress is known to negatively impact our immune system and make us more susceptible to illness, especially considering its impact on our immune system. The ability to manage stress, build resilience, foster high self-esteem and self-awareness, and form deeper social connections are built on good emotional health.

Emotional wellbeing can also be improved through physical health practices like getting adequate sleep and exercising, social health practices like spending time with loved ones and spiritual health practices like spending time in nature.‍

Life in the social sphere

According to researchers, poor social health has been linked to physical and mental health problems such as high blood pressure, heart attacks, cancer, depression, and anxiety. In addition, the impact of loneliness on our immune systems has been linked to chronic illnesses like heart disease and inflammation, with studies showing that lonely people die prematurely 50% more often than those with good social support.

Maintaining good mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional health, managing stress, experiencing joy in life and nurturing healthy and meaningful social relationships is essential. The quality of our social relationships, just as much as the quantity, is crucial to our health. Negative or toxic relationships can be just as damaging as no relationships.

Engaging with your community, turning to family and friends for support, building meaningful relationships with others, setting healthy boundaries, communicating effectively, and building in-person relationships are all examples of healthy life in the social sphere.

Spirituality

People’s perceptions of spiritual wellbeing differ, so defining it is more complex than defining other holistic health aspects. While spirituality and faith are distinct, they can overlap based on one’s beliefs. A person’s spirituality can be defined as their connection to intangible or non-physical elements, such as the feelings they get when they do something they find meaningful or the meaning they place on specific places, groups, and practices. Some people consider spirituality a connection to their faith, while others consider it a connection to themselves, their purpose, or their environment.

We can maintain our spiritual health by engaging with our community, spending time in nature, practising faith, and doing things we enjoy. These practices enhance all aspects of our health and wellbeing. ‍

The Mind

A person’s mental health differs from their emotional health in that it refers to their overall cognitive wellbeing and how their brain functions rather than their mood and emotional state. The components of a person’s mental health range from biological factors to physical wellbeing to socioeconomic pressures to relationships, and good mental health reflects a person’s overall wellbeing.

There are many ways to support your mental health holistically. For example, when treating or preventing mental illnesses and their causes, self-directed activities such as getting more sleep, reducing stress and eating a nutrient-rich diet can complement treatment methods like psychotherapy, art therapy, natural alternatives or medication to achieve more effective results.

Treating the whole person, not just the symptoms

‍Those who practice holistic medicine use a variety of treatments, suggestions, and techniques to support the health of their patients, with the goal of treating the person as a whole – not just their symptoms. By offering tailored, evidence-backed therapies based on a person’s needs, a holistic provider should enable them to make informed decisions about what works for them, their health and their goals. The holistic approach can thus promote profound, long-lasting healing while encouraging people to care for their bodies and minds better.
